Why Are Some Teachers Helping Kids Cheat?

Last year, 60% of high school students admitted to cheating on at least one test. According to a report in Reader’s Digest, those students may not be alone because a growing number of teachers are cheating too. In the past year, school districts in New York and New Jersey have uncovered several organized “cheating rings,” where teachers either supplied test answers to students or they purposely changed wrong answers to correct answers while grading tests!

Another investigation red flagged 700 schools in Texas for “suspicious test results.” One of the worst cases of teacher cheating happened at City Day Community School in Dayton, Ohio. That’s where an entire grade FLUNKED the math portion of a statewide assessment test two years ago. One year later, all of those same students earned PASSING grades! As it turned out, teachers had helped rig the results. So why on earth would a teacher want to help kids cheat?

As is often the case, it all boils down to money. Sometimes a teacher’s salary is based on the performance of their students. Also, schools that perform well academically generally get more state funding. Schools with poor test scores often get punished with fewer dollars. That’s been especially true since 2001, when the No Child Left Behind Act became law. Experts say there’s been a surge in teacher cheating since then – because of the pressure educators feel to boost scores.

Professor Gregory Cizek – of the University of North Carolina – is an expert on cheating in schools. He says teacher cheating is “more prevalent than anyone wants to admit.” Since teachers are paid to be role models, their behavior sends a more destructive message to kids – who already see enough in the news about athletes on steroids, or CEOs dodging taxes. That message is: cheating is okay. So what can you do to make sure your school is cheat free? One idea is to force educators to sign a code of ethics and anyone caught cheating would immediately have their license revoked! Bottom line: School districts need to get wise to what’s going on, before your kid picks up cheating habits that could last a lifetime.

One Suummer Day....AN Example of a Narrative

ONE SUMMER DAY

I had never been happier, more exited, and at the same time more frightened in one single day. I was 12 years old, when I with my childhood friends: Paco, Santiago, Nicaragua, César, Brenda and Ivan. This summer day started early full of fun and finished late with a frightening ending.

It was 9 am and I was sleeping when I heard that in my window, some stones were thrown up by Santiago and Paco. They were singing in loud voice to wake me up. I dressed up fast and I went to them. That morning I had a very friendly wake up. A very happy and funny morning was to start.

We went to our other friends. All together played with balloons filled with water throwing among each other. Finally, we seemed like a “soup”, consequently; we agreed about going to our house and take a shower. That summer morning was so exciting that we decided to do other things.

In the afternoon my friends and I went to Carl´s Jr. but to get there, on the way, we got lost among the streets. After so much time we arrived to the fast food restaurant. We had dinner, played jokes and almost started a “food fight” among us. Then we come back to our homes.

At night we were playing outside in the streets again. It was like 11 p.m. and we were playing hide and seek. Everybody was found, the only one that was missing was Paco. So all of us screamed his name along the street, but nothing happened.

In the street there was an empty house, that before that day, we had opened to play. We thought that he was there due to we saw a shadow of a boy running in the stairs. We yelled at him, and suddenly Paco went out of his house saying that he was in the bathroom. My friends and I were freaked out and after that, each one went to home.

We will never know who that shadow was. A very frightening night was that one. There is no doubt that, that summer day was so special. To sum up, it was the perfect summer day, a day full of funny experiences, with a meal with joke taste, and a chilling hide and seek. It was a memorable day with all the “flavors” in it.

The KONK

The Konk was written by Puerto Rican/Cuban Poet Piri Thomas. He grew up in Spanish Harlem which is part of Up-town New York City. This story is on ECAMS under readings. Instead of questions this time, I would like for you to compare the last two stories we read. I expect at least 3-5 paragraphs. If you are wondering what story I'm refering to it is 'Behind the Facade of the Modern Home. Make sure you have a thesis, Body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. I want you to write your essays here on the blog. SOOOOOO.....I suggest to do it first on Microsoft Word then copy and past it to the blog. This way you can eliminate spelling errors! This will be due by next class!
